after a lot of consideration the World map final size and resolution was chosen:

Image

- every little square of this map is one superG scenario (512x512 tiles = 262 thousand tiles)
- world map is 42 x 45 superG's scenarios (together 1890 squares = 495.5 million tiles)

this world map uses real geographic coordinates and spans from 15W to 40E long and from 70N to 25N lat
(if you ever wanted to build a village on your real city location, welcome)

basic terrain will be generated in four passes using four geodata maps - elevation, terrain, hydro and soil/vegetation
and later will be manually adjusted using multiuser terrain editor, the final version is the map, we play
Image

finally, the complete map is gigantic and won't be distributed in once rather server will deliver parts of it according to client requests after server checks
if client can really see requested part of the world (as side effect this will disable maphacks)

There was a question about the resolution of elevation map. And it's kinda huge.

One square = one scenario (in old terms). Soon you will see how the scenarios are connected together. Or rather - you won't see at all. They are acting as one large map.

This is Sicily:

Every pixel represents 2x2 diamond tiles and the red square is the size of AoK's giant map for comparison.

On a side note: there are 1482 non water superG maps so if you spread your kingdom over let's say 5 squares (20 giant maps in AoK) there is the possibility of almost 300 rival kingdoms to exist.
